About Us

The concept of Richards Laboratories was developed by Dean Richards, M.A., M.T. (ASCP) in 1973. At the time Dean taught clinical microbiology classes at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He was often asked to provide microbiological testing for local physicians. He organized a corporation known as Medical Laboratory Associates to fill what he perceived as a void in professional services available to physicians in their offices. That void consisted of a lack of access by physicians in private practice to the rapid and economical diagnosis of human pathogenic microbiology. Dean was particularly aware of how helpful the prompt diagnosis of pathogenic microorganisms can be to the practicing physician and to the patient.

In 1977 crucial business expansion commenced. After adding personnel with the appropriate qualifications, a study program was conducted to analyze the markets outside of the state of Utah. Texas was determined to be fertile ground for the expansion, because of the number of large cities in the state. Today, 30 years later, Richards Laboratories of Texas continues to operate in Amarillo, Dallas, Fort Worth and Lubbock.

In the intervening time, Dean along with Dr. Brent Johnson (virologist from Brigham Young University) and Garth Croft (professor at the University of Utah) formed a research group. Test procedures for herpes and chlamydia were developed and sold to two large Medical Supply Corporations. The research and development that this group performs is an important component in keeping the company on the leading edge of microbiology.

With rapid growth, it became necessary to acquire a larger, more expandable home office facility for Richards Laboratories of Utah and Richards Laboratories of Texas. In 1984 our current home office location in Pleasant Grove, Utah was established. The office is housed in a historical home that is well over 100 years old. Help from an industrial revenue bond was utilized to restore the home to it's original beauty. A major facelift provided a functional and adaptable corporate home office.

In the fall of 1988 Richards Industrial Microbiology Laboratory (RIM) was incorporated to provide testing for industrial accounts in food microbiology, chemical and environmental testing. This company quickly branched out into bioremediation. This division has developed unique processes and has seen an expanded growth in demand for this service.

In 1993, due to CLIA regulations, Richards Laboratories established central laboratories in Amarillo, Dallas, Fort Worth and Lubbock, Texas. Central laboratories were also established in Pleasant Grove and West Valley City, Utah. The inception of these central laboratories brought changes in specimen collection and testing. Cultures are now set up in offices and transported to the applicable central laboratory for testing.

Over the years Richards Laboratories has gained a reputation for providing competent, professional and accurate service. Our goal as a company is to consistently maintain a team that will provide microbiology service at a reasonable price and in the most expedient manner to our valued customers.
